What it is
Naturie Hatomugi Skin Conditioner is a Japanese hydrating toner in a 500ml bottle. It is built around Job's tears extract, a plant source of amino acids, in a thin, fast-absorbing formula that is fragrance-free, alcohol-free, oil-free and surfactant-free. Applied in generous layers to face or body, or used as a lotion mask on cotton pads.
Why it's different
Sized and priced to be used generously, which is the point. The recommended amount is far more than a normal toner, applied in two or three layers.

How to use
1. After cleansing, pour a generous amount into your palms.
2. Press it into the skin, then repeat two or three times.
3. Stop when the skin feels cool to the touch, which is the sign it has taken up enough.
4. Follow with an emulsion or cream to seal it in. On its own it does not hold moisture in.
Also works as a lotion mask on cotton pads for five minutes, and on the body after sun exposure.

How do I use it as a lotion mask?
Soak four or five cotton pads until saturated, split them if you want thinner layers, and lay them over the face for around five minutes. Do not leave them until they dry out, because drying pads draw moisture back off the skin. Follow immediately with a moisturizer.
Is it enough on its own, or do I need a moisturizer after?
You need something after it. It is a hydrating layer with no oil and no occlusive, so it delivers water to the skin but does nothing to keep it there. Follow with an emulsion, gel or cream, otherwise the hydration evaporates and the skin can end up drier than before.
Can I use it on my body?
Yes, and the 500ml size is intended for it. It is commonly used on the arms, legs and back, and after sun exposure, because it is fragrance-free and alcohol-free. Follow with a body lotion on dry areas for the same reason as on the face.
What is Job's tears?
Job's tears, or hatomugi in Japanese, is a grain related to barley. The seed extract is used in Japanese skincare as a plant-derived source of amino acids and has a long history in both traditional remedies and modern products. In this formula it is the main moisturizing ingredient.
