The smell and feel of this product make you feel like something is about to happen. It's like a medicinal herb smell, and I can't really describe it, but it "seems like it's going to work." I really like it, but I think people will have different opinions about it, so if you're sensitive to it, it might be best to check it out in store before purchasing. It gives you peace of mind without drying out your skin.
This oil-based toner has a unique fragrance. It's said to contain ferulic acid, an antioxidant, and lactic acid, which helps with exfoliation. When I use this product, my skin looks vibrant and healthy. It's radiant and the dullness seems to be lifted. It also seems to help prevent my skin's barrier function from weakening. I only use it at night, applying this Brew Facial Essence after cleansing and applying a toner, followed by Kiehl's Calendula Toner, and then Kiehl's Retinol Serum and Moisturizing Cream. The product is small and expensive for a toner, but since I only use a small amount, it doesn't run out easily.
I used to use it on my entire face during the dry season, but as the temperature rose and I started to worry about sebum, I started getting more bumps on my forehead. Now I avoid using it on my forehead and only use it on areas that feel tight. I'm glad that the bumps on my forehead that didn't respond to topical ointments are starting to fade.
It's a bit of a mixed bag. I bought it to combat dry winter skin. I've tried several oil-in-lotions from different companies, but I found Kanebo's to be the best. This one isn't bad, but it's not great either. I wonder? Maybe the texture and price aren't worth it. If I were using only this product, I wouldn't have noticed, but after trying them out, that's my impression.
When I bought Kiehl's retinol serum, it came with a mini size. It's a lotion that you shake and use, and has a light texture. It moisturizes but isn't heavy, so it's very easy to use. The color is light brown. The color is fine, but the scent bothers me. It has a unique medicinal scent. I guess it can't be helped since it's the smell of the ingredients, but to be honest, I didn't like it. I think it's a good lotion for people who don't mind the scent.
