What it is
Hada Labo Gokujyun Lotion is a Japanese hydrating toner in a 170ml bottle. It uses four types of hyaluronic acid, including a lactic-acid-fermented one, in a short fifteen-ingredient formula with no fragrance or colorant. Press two or three drops into damp skin after cleansing, morning and night.
Why it's different
Four types of hyaluronic acid rather than a single one, including a lactococcus ferment Rohto developed for this line.
Fifteen ingredients in total, with no fragrance, colorant, alcohol or urea, which is why this is the version usually recommended for reactive skin.
Thinner and faster to absorb than Gokujyun Premium. If you want the richer eight-hyaluronic-acid formula with sacran, that is the Premium, not this one.
How to use
1. After cleansing, pour two or three drops into your palm.
2. Press it into the skin with your palms rather than wiping or patting.
3. Add a second layer on dry areas if the skin still feels tight.
4. Follow with an emulsion, cream or gel to seal it in.
Use morning and night.

What is the difference between Gokujyun Lotion and Gokujyun Premium?
The number of hyaluronic acid types and the texture. This original Gokujyun has four types in a fifteen-ingredient formula with a light, slightly viscous feel. Gokujyun Premium has eight types plus sacran, a polysaccharide from Japanese freshwater algae, and hydroxyethyl urea, which makes it thicker and better suited to very dry skin. If your skin is normal to combination, or you would rather avoid urea, the original is the better fit.
Is this the same as the Hada Labo sold in US stores?
Not necessarily. Rohto sells a separate Hada Labo Tokyo range in the US with its own formulations, so a US bottle can carry a different ingredient list from the Japanese domestic one. What is listed on this page is the Japanese domestic formula, and the full ingredient list is published here so you can compare it directly against whatever else you are looking at.
Should I get the 170ml bottle or the 400ml pump?
Same formula, different bottle. The 170ml is the standard size and travels more easily. The 400ml pump costs less per millilitre and is easier to use one-handed, but it is not designed to be refilled. If you already know the formula suits you, the pump is the more economical choice.
Is this a toner or an essence?
In Japan the category is called keshousui, which sits between the two. It goes on straight after cleansing like a Western toner, but it does not exfoliate or remove residue, and the texture is thicker and more viscous than most Western toners. Treat it as your first hydrating layer rather than a cleansing step.

It doesn't moisturize unless you apply it several times. It's quite refreshing.
It's a thick lotion. It dries slowly (penetrates easily), so I don't use it before applying makeup on days when I'm in a hurry, like before going out. I often use it as a lotion pack before going to bed or when I have time. It feels too heavy to use in hot weather, so it's a lotion that I use from autumn to spring.
