When inserting the refill, make sure the refill lid is securely closed. Align the joint of the refill with the indentation on the left side of the compact case and snap it into place. Then, press down firmly from above until you hear a "click". To replace the refill, turn the compact case upside down with the lid open and slowly press the bottom of the refill with both thumbs to remove it.
