What it is
The red pigment contained in safflower petals is only 1%. Extracting the red pigment is a laborious process, and using it as a dye requires advanced techniques and knowledge. In the Heian period, "karakurenai," a color created by dyeing with safflower, and "hanezu," a color created by applying a deep red after a base dye, were special colors that only high-ranking individuals could wear. Hollywood first released lipstick containing safflower pigment in 1978. In the Edo period, rouge was expensive and sold in the form of a dye applied to the inside of plates and bowls. It is said that there were also portable rouge called "beniita." The first lipstick containing safflower pigment released by Hollywood was not a stick, but appeared in a palette container reminiscent of traditional Japanese rouge.
