What it is
Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Lotion is a rich Japanese hydrating toner in a 170ml bottle. It combines eight types of hyaluronic acid with sacran, a moisture-holding polysaccharide from Japanese freshwater algae, in a thicker formula than the original Gokujyun. Press it into damp skin after cleansing, morning and night.
Why it's different
Eight types of hyaluronic acid against four in the original Gokujyun, including a 3D crosslinked form and a skin-adhering form that stays on the surface longer.
Adds sacran, a polysaccharide from Aphanothece sacrum, a freshwater algae found only in Kyushu, which Rohto uses for its water-holding capacity.
Noticeably thicker than the original. Better for dry and dehydrated skin, less comfortable under makeup in humidity, and it contains hydroxyethyl urea, which a small number of people find sensitising.
How to use
1. After cleansing, pour three or four drops into your palm.
2. Warm it briefly between your palms, since the texture is thicker than the original.
3. Press it into the skin, layering again on dry areas.
4. Follow with an emulsion or cream. On very dry skin it also works as a short compress on a cotton pad.
Use morning and night.

How is this different from the regular Gokujyun Lotion?
Premium has eight types of hyaluronic acid against four, and adds sacran plus hydroxyethyl urea. The formula runs to around thirty-five ingredients where the original runs to fifteen. In practice Premium feels thicker, sits on the skin longer, and does more for genuinely dry skin. The original is lighter and shorter, which suits normal, combination and reactive skin better.
Is it too heavy to wear under makeup?
It can be, depending on climate. The texture is viscous and takes longer to settle than the original, so in humidity or under a full base it can leave makeup sitting unevenly. If you want it in your morning routine, use a single thin layer and give it two or three minutes before the next step, or keep Premium for evenings and use the original in the morning.
Does it contain urea?
Yes, as hydroxyethyl urea, which is a humectant that also helps soften rough texture. Most people tolerate it without issue, but it is a known trigger for a small number of people with sensitive or compromised skin. If you have reacted to urea before, the original Gokujyun Lotion does not contain it.
What is sacran?
Sacran is a polysaccharide extracted from Aphanothece sacrum, a freshwater algae that grows only in a few spring-fed rivers in Kyushu, Japan. It is used in Japanese skincare as a moisture-holding ingredient alongside hyaluronic acid, and it is the main thing separating the Premium formula from the standard one beyond the extra hyaluronic acid types.
